Contemporary Indigenous artist
Kate Constantine (Konstantina) is a contemporary Indigenous artist of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, recognised for her neo-contemporary reinterpretation of traditional dot painting.
Represented by galleries in Paris, London, Sydney and Melbourne, her exhibitions have consistently sold out, cementing her position within the international contemporary Indigenous art landscape.
The story behind the work
Konstantina’s contemporary Indigenous art practice centres on reconnection.
As a proud Gadigal woman of the Eora Nation, her work reinterprets traditional dot painting through a modern lens — exploring culture, Country and continuity.
Each layered mark carries intention. Patterns trace memory, lineage and belonging, bridging ancestral knowledge with contemporary expression.
These works are not decorative interpretations. They are considered acts of reclamation.
In this collaboration, the artwork remains the focus — translated into a form designed to carry story beyond the gallery space.
Buraga, 2022
The work
In Gadigal language, Buraga is a motion verb — to arise, to step up, to stand.
Within this work, the term is used metaphorically — acknowledging individuals and organisations who choose to step forward in the ongoing work of reconciliation.
The layered forms move with intention, suggesting momentum and collective progress rather than stillness.
Through repetition and rhythm, the composition becomes both a statement and an invitation — a visual expression of responsibility and forward movement.
